2011 Annual Meeting
Cheyenne Information
WELCOME TO CHEYENNE, WYOMING!!
Welcome to Cheyenne - gateway to the West! Cheyenne was founded in 1867 as a station on the first transcontinental railroad, because of a geological condition. The city sits on the Gangplank - the apron of alluvial sand and gravel washed eastward from the ancestral Laramie Range, which had been worn down to a pediment in Neogene time. Because of the nearly constant grade, it was the easiest route to build a railroad to cross the Rocky Mountain front. Further south in Colorado and north in Wyoming, this erosional surface was dissected and removed. But in Cheyenne, the alluvial sand and gravel of the Miocene Ogallala Formation is preserved, where the Wyoming wind comes sweeping down the plains!
Home of the “Daddy of ‘em All,” Cheyenne, Wyoming is famous for the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration. Held the latter part of July each year, it has been kicking up dust since 1897. While it is not concurrent with our RMS/AAPG conference, you can check out the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum and Store located at Frontier Park, North Carey Avenue.
