Imperial Barrel Award Announcement

Our RMS Section Executive Committee voted to support a new program for students called the Imperial Barrel Award. This program is based on a 30-year program from Imperial College London. It is an exciting competition for graduate geoscience students in which University teams are given an industry-supplied prospect data set to interpret. The students analyze the data and then make presentations to a panel of professional industry judges. Prize money is awarded for the first, second and third place teams. We are sending $10,000 to the RMS Foundation to provide prize money to winning schools in the RMS geographical area. For more information, contact Steve Sonnenberg at sasonnenbg@aol.com or go to www.aapg.org/iba.

Maps in Schools Program

A program called 'Maps in Schools' is attracting the attention of many AAPG Sections as a way to promote geoscience education in the schools. The program was initiated by the Corpus Christi Geological Society wherein they purchase and frame colorful USGS geologic maps of the US and donate them to public schools. The maps come with instruction for the teachers on how to read the geologic history from the beautiful patterns on the map. The idea’s creator, Owen Hopkins (owenh@suemaur.com) reports that these maps are raising curiosity about the geosciences in schools where they have been installed. Our RMS Section is sending $10,000 to the RMS Foundation to provide money for the program in the RMS geographical area. Disbursements will be handled by the Foundation. For more information, visit www.ccgeo.org/phase1.asp. Please think about working with the Foundation to get maps into the schools in your area.
